Na przykladzie zbiorowossci wielkomiejskiej (Social capital and quality of life. A study of a metropolitan population) and numerous scholarly articles. Book jacket., The main intention of the author was to take partin a discussion on quality of life, which is an important topic. As it was pointed out in the introduction, quality of life category is omnipresent in social, medical and other disciplines that are related to human existence. There are many reasons why it takes such anhonorable place in the research, considerations and discussions. One of the main ones is undoubtedly the fact that, as J. Czapinski (1991) states, it is the main premise of purposeful human activity. Also, as the concept of quality of life refers to many aspects of individual''s life, it is deeply embedded in its consciousness. In spite of big interest in quality of life both in scientific and practical fields, the term is seen as continuously evolving concept, which is also becoming more and more diverse (Andre, Bitondo 2001). It is understandable, though, when one realizes how complex the key concepts ("quality" and "life") are and how undetermined the related constructs (well-being and happiness) are. The factors that condition quality of life turn out to be equally ambiguous. Until now, no one came up with a panacea for happy life, even though theoreticians and practitioners take constant actions in order to answer the question on what makes a happy life. For many people, quality of life is closely related to material conditions. Even though it has been known, based on scientific research, that achieving certain goods is not the main condition of happiness, observation of social life shows that such way of thinking still prevails. Fortunately, in considerations on quality of life, holistic perception of human is used; apart from physical sphere, it includes psychological and spiritual dimension as constitutive elements of every integral individual (Wnuk, Marcinkowski 2012). It certainly has its reason. According to E. Kasprzak and R. Derbis (1999), objective factors do not directly determine life satisfaction, but indicating the perception of reality, influence the level of satisfaction. Studies also show that subjectively high quality of life does not correspond with objective conditions in which the individual functions and to which it is subjected (Sek 1993). This is why studies on quality of life analyze both material aspect and subjective evaluations of studied individuals. Such approach was also used in this scientific project. In response to needs regarding search for potential determinants of quality of life, this research includes conceptions of social capital that is currently treated as a resource that brings certain benefits in many aspects of life and on its different levels: micro-, mezzo- and macro-social (W. Baker, R.D. Putnam, F. Fukuyama, D. Cohen, L. Prusack, Productivity Commission, OECD). The individualistic aspect is the main part of presented research results. The basic objective of the research was to contribute to the development of understanding theoretical and practical relations between social capital and quality of life. Especially that both of these conception over the past decade attracted the interest of theoreticians and practitioners (Naess 1999; Baker 2000; Putnam 2000; Woolcock 2001; Bjornskov 2003), as key conceptions from the point of view of discovering factors that could lead to improvement of quality of life in objective and subjective aspects. Having reviewed existing conceptions of social capital, multidimensional approach of the investigated phenomenon was decided upon. Three components of social capital were distinguished in empirical analysis: networks, norms and social trust. It is assumed after D. Halpern (2005) that this term means a set of resources produced in the process of interactions of an individual in a specific social situation. In order to carry out reliable study on relations between social capital and quality of life, two different research methods were used (quantitative and qualitative) and exploration included both level and structure of social capital., This study explores quality-of-life fundamentals, an omnipresent concept in social, medical, and other disciplines relating to human existence. High quality of life is the main premise of purposeful human activity and is deeply embedded in human consciousness. Those responsible for creating quality social life must establish suitable conditions for cultivating social capital and improving the efficiency of actions at different institutional levels by different subjects and within different local and national policies. The findings in this volume are therefore critical to those who wish to build good social relations, which are one of the most important, if not "the" most important, correlations to happiness.
